The Cosmic Perspective

“It comes from the universe,” is what the famed astrophysicist Neil deGrasse Tyson told us when we praised his passion after his recent lecture-performance in San Francisco. Such is the essence of his Cosmic Perspective on life. We humans tend to way overrate the cosmic importance of our existence.

The “Pale Blue Dot.” A NASA image of Earth from behind the rings of Saturn puts our planet and ourselves into proper perspective.

Neil deGrasse Tyson’s 13-part television documentary Cosmos did much to enlighten audiences around the world about the fact that all the chemical elements that exist on earth can be found in exact proportion to those found in the universe as a whole. As he says, following Carl Sagan, “we are made of stardust.”

My partner Aggie and I met up with Neil after the performance. What an honor to meet this inspiring, brilliant, courageous, friendly, humble man—truly one of the leading lights of 21st Century science.
